Safe toys and gifts picture

December is Safe Toys & Gifts month.  With the holiday season upon us, here are a few safety tips to follow when purchasing toys for young children:

  • For children less than 3 years of age, try to avoid small toys that may cause choking.

  • High-powered magnet sets are dangerous and should be kept away from small children.

  • Toys such as bicycles, scooters, skateboards, etc. should be used with proper safety gear such as helmets, knee and elbow pads.

  • Once gifts have been opened, immediately discard plastic wrapping or any other type of wrapping that may cause harm to small children.

If you are unsure of safety of a toy/product, you may make reference to the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission).  They provide free safety alerts, guides, posters, brochures, handbooks and other materials which you can use to help spread consumer product safety information in your community.

Remember the "Reason for the Season" - to give to those that are less fortunate.  There are several organizations that would greatly appreciate your support and generosity this holiday season such as:  SASA, Salvation Army, Good Angel Tree, coat and mitten drives, and many more organizations in the community.
