June is:

Cataract Awareness Month:

  • Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss in the U.S..

  • Cataracts are a gradual clouding of the natural lens that is inside your eye.

  • Cataracts allow less light to pass through the eye and distort your vision.

  • Surgery can be performed to treat this.

  • There is no sure way to prevent cataracts; however, there is a way to slow down your chances of getting cataracts.  Progression of cataracts can be reduced by avoiding smoking, reducing exposure to UV rays, eating healthy foods and making sure you wear eye protection to avoid eye injuries.
  • Symptoms include:  blurred vision, decreased vision at night, "halos" around lights and needing more light to read.
