As you are preparing for your child(ren) to go back to school here are some helpful tips for you to think about.

  • Make sure they get enough sleep.  A preschooler or younger grade school child should get anywhere between 11 to 12 hours of sleep a night.  Sleep is important for teenagers too.  It is recommended that they get 9 to 10 hours of sleep.
  • Have your child(ren) eat a healthy breakfast every day.
  • When picking out school supplies, have them pick out appropriate clothing and shoes for running and jumping.  Choose a backpack that is light weight, has wide padded shoulder pads and a waist belt and tell your child(ren) not to overload their backpack.
  • Make sure immunizations are up to date.
  • If your child has a medical condition such as food allergies, asthma, diabetes, etc. make sure that the child's teacher and school nurse are aware of this and are informed of what action to take in case a medical emergency arises.
  • Go over before and after school plans with your child(ren) and establish rules for them to follow.
    • If your child is staying home by themselves after school, here are some helpful tips/rules that you may want to follow.
      • Know what time your child(ren) should be arriving at home.
      • Have your child(ren) check in with a neighbor or have them call you as soon as they get home.
      • Specify that NOONE is to be allowed in the home when you are not there.
      • NEVER open door to strangers.
      • Have a plan if an emergency situation arises.
      • Make sure your child(ren) will be safe in the home and set rules as to what type of activities they may participate in whether they are at home or after school activities/programs.
  • Have a quiet place in the house where your child(ren) can do their homework without any distractions from electronics, text messaging, TV etc...
    • Never do your child's homework or school projects, but encourage them to do their best and let them know that if they have any questions that you are there to help them.
    • Review your child's homework nightly to make sure that they understand everything and to make sure that all assignments are completed.
    • Encourage kids to establish a good work habit such as taking good notes, writing down assignments and if they don't understand something that they should ask their teacher for help.
  • Make sure your child knows that you are there to listen to any concerns they may have because peer pressure can be a tough thing for them to deal with.
  • Most importantly, let your child know that you don't expect perfection, but that they try their best in everything that they do.
