Did you know....

  • Valentine's Day was named after St. Valentine.  There may have been multiple St. Valentine's throughout history, but this particular St. Valentine was the most common "founder".  St. Valentine went against the ruling of Emperor Claudius II.  Claudius banned marriage because he thought women distracted young soldiers.  St. Valentine thought otherwise and would secretly marry couples until he got caught.  After he was sentenced to his death, young couples would visit him and bring him flowers and cards.  He died on February 14th.
  • Valentine's Day cards were note exchanged until the 17th century and cards were not mass-produced until the 1840's.
  • It is the 2nd most popular special occasion for sending cards, with Christmas being the top.
  • On average men will spend about $235 on Valentine's Day, while women spend approximately $120.
  • The most popular Valentine's Day gift is flowers, followed by chocolate and jewelry.
  • Necco Sweethearts, the small candy hearts with approximately 45 sayings - "True Love", "Hug Me, - were invented in 1866.  More than 8 billion conversation hearts are manufactured each year.  They have a shelf life of 5 years!
